We primarily have just two seasons here in the tropics, the rainy season and the dry season. Like in other regions, different pest species have specific preferences for harbourage, temperature, moisture, and food sources, which can vary depending on the season.
There are four major determining factors for pest presence, food, water shelter/harbourage, and an ideal temperature range.
Rainy Season
Mosquitoes and termites are more prevalent during this time because their reproductive capacity increases in cool and moist conditions. Increased precipitation boosts activity from moisture-loving bugs like mosquitoes, cockroaches, stink bugs, and termites.
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so after heavy rainfall, mosquito populations can increase.
The hurricane season in Trinidad and Tobago can also lead to an increase in pest activity, particularly mosquitoes and other insects that can breed in stagnant water after heavy rains or flooding.
Dry Season
As it gets drier and even hotter, pests can only take so much of the heat, pests will seek shade in dark, humid places in your residence. This can be under porches, under rocks, and in piles of wood, clutter, or leaves. It is a good measure to proactively clean, sanitize and (where possible) eliminate preferred pest harbourages before the hot and humid weather arrives.
Fleas and the Ringed Paper Wasps (Jack Spaniard) thrive in the drier months. While fleas seek humidity, they drown easily and so their rate of survivability is higher in the dry season.
Overall, it is important to be aware of the potential effects of seasonal changes on pest activity and take proactive measures to prevent pest infestations throughout the year.
