Oh, Those Early Years…
Oh, Those Early Years…
When I started our pest control service, I think that it was just the right moment for me as I was able to purchase a vehicle and all of the equipment I needed for very little money.
The business operated out of my rented townhouse, making it home, office, and storeroom all in one. In those days all correspondence was typed on one of those now ancient machines, phone calls were made via corded, rotary landlines and fax machines were the height of office technology.
Initially I sold all the jobs and did the service myself with a part-time secretary. As business increased, I hired more technicians and continued working alongside them whilst supervising all the work myself. The most difficult years were those during which we fished around to better understand the nature of the industry. There was no independent training available locally and it took a few years before I began to discover publications which could be helpful. A breakthrough was my purchase of Truman’s Scientific Guide to Pest Control and later on PCT Magazine (Pest Control Technology Magazine).
Those were the days of pest control by toxic chemicals. Almost all of the pesticides had lingering odours which penetrated our skin, clothes, vehicles and homes. It wasn’t unusual to eat with the scent of lingering odours on our hands despite our best efforts to thoroughly clean-up.
A big challenge was finding out how to price jobs and win them; the big jobs all seemed to be sold for impossibly low prices. It didn’t help that the default application regime seemed to be over-treatment. As a result, our jobs were done so mechanically and slavishly that we used much more materials than we should have, which meant that our profits were miniscule.
To this day most buildings which we have serviced for termites, have not had to be retreated even after thirty-eight plus years, and I suspect that we could have gotten a better price for our work back then by offering a one-hundred-year warranty!
By the 1990’s, reforms in pesticide labelling and acceptable levels of toxic pesticide exposure encouraged the development of safer pesticides and the reduced use of pesticides in absolute terms thus promoting non-chemical or least pesticide control. We were one of the first to do adopt this methodology.
By accident we stumbled across an innovative aerosol dispensing system that has been a game changer in the control of small flying insects, repelling roaches and odour control. In the process have become the industry leader in this segment.
Ultimately, developing this service and adopting the IPM approach helped us establish our brand.
